Living in the Now — A Sound Bath Reflection

A Sound Bath exploration of presence, time, and returning to where you already are

Welcome to another Afterbath Session with Mat Creedon 🌿

It’s easy to think we’re living our lives, when in reality we’re often just thinking about them.

Thinking about what’s already happened.

Thinking about what might happen next.

Thinking about what we should have done differently, or what still needs to be done.

In many ways, this is the state we arrive in before a Sound Bath — mentally busy, time-focused, and slightly disconnected from the body. We move from one moment to the next with a constant sense of urgency, feeling like there’s never enough time. And yet, at the same time, we’re often surprised by how quickly the years pass.

One day we look up and realise a decade has gone by, and we’re left wondering where it all went.

A Sound Bath Perspective on Time

Most of our stress doesn’t actually come from what’s happening right now. It comes from the mind’s habit of travelling backward and forward in time — replaying the past or rehearsing the future — while the present moment quietly slips past unnoticed.

This is why Sound Baths can feel so powerful. Sound doesn’t exist in the past or the future. It only exists now. When we allow ourselves to listen fully, the mind naturally stops time-travelling and begins to settle into the present moment.

The present moment isn’t something mystical or special. It’s simply this moment — as it is. Reading these words. Breathing in. Breathing out. Feeling the weight of the body. Hearing whatever sounds happen to be around you, or within you.

Presence, Stillness, and the Sound Bath Experience

When we’re not lost in thought, the now is often surprisingly peaceful. This doesn’t mean life suddenly becomes perfect, or that difficult things disappear. It simply means we stop adding unnecessary tension by mentally arguing with what already is.

A Sound Bath supports this shift beautifully. You’re not required to fix anything, analyse anything, or improve anything. You’re simply invited to listen and allow the sound to meet you where you are.

Many people assume that being present — or attending a Sound Bath — means trying to stop thinking, or forcing the mind to be quiet. In my experience, it’s the opposite. Presence comes from allowing whatever is here to be here — thoughts included — without being pulled around by them.

You don’t need to escape the past or control the future. You simply notice when the mind has wandered and gently return to the sound. Again and again. No judgement. No effort.

Even a few moments of genuine listening can feel deeply restorative.

Why Sound Baths Bring Us Back to the Now

This is one of the reasons I work so much with Sound Baths and immersive sound. Sound naturally anchors attention in the present moment. When we listen without analysing or labelling, the nervous system begins to soften on its own.

In a Sound Bath, silence is just as important as sound. The space between tones allows the body to integrate, rest, and recalibrate. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is demanded.

If you’d like to support this reflection with an extended Sound Bath experience, I’ve shared a one-hour 3D Ambisonic Tibetan Singing Bowl Sound Bath on YouTube. It’s designed as a space to rest, soften, and return to the present moment at your own pace.

One Last Thing

There’s nothing you need to achieve while listening. No technique to follow. No goal to reach. Just let the Sound Bath unfold, and allow yourself to be exactly where you are.

Sometimes, that’s more than enough.
